Hot water extraction involves injecting hot water (not steam) into the carpet fibers and then immediately extracting the water along with embedded dirt, oils, and debris. This method is powerful, efficient, and gets carpets truly clean—without over-saturating them or using excessive heat.
Steam cleaning once had a reputation for being the gold standard in carpet care. But that was 10–20 years ago. Back then, machines with onboard heaters were common because the industry believed higher heat meant better cleaning. Today, research shows otherwise.
The difference between hot water and actual steam (about 10–20° hotter) makes little to no difference in cleaning performance. In fact, steam can sometimes damage carpet fibers or backing if misused.
Additionally, machines with heaters are bulky and heavy—making them harder to maneuver and transport, especially in residential settings. That's why many professionals, including us, are phasing them out.
